Psychological assessment of parties

When there is disagreement between the parties concerning child arrangements for primary residence and contact, the matter can be referred to a psychologist who will conduct a psychological assessment of the parties concerned.

The evaluation focuses on what is in the best interests of the child. Considered, is what will be best for the child based on various factors such as their life circumstances, stage of development, and relationships.


What is the process?

  • The first step , in the absence of a court order directing such investigation to be conducted, is for both parties to give their consent to undergo the psychological evaluation as well as their consent for the assessment of a minor child.
  • An evaluation is conducted of each of the parties, as well as of the child, which may include interviews, observations and psychometrics.
  • A report is submitted to the parties that contains the psychologist's recommendations.

Generally it will take between 3 and 6 months, depending on the availability of the parties.

It is only when the recommendations contained in the report are made an order of the court, that it becomes binding.
